West Fork kicks off 2019 with J-Term

High school students and teachers at West Fork started 2019 with a big change in their usual activities.

Having taken their midterms before the holiday break, West Fork students were left with a week of classes in the New Year before the second semester started. To fill this time, West Fork is doing something new by shaking up the normal routine with a “J-Term.”

“It’s gone really well,” said Principal Bobby Willms. “Teachers have been really excited and the kids have been really excited.”

Instead of regular classes during the J-Term, students split up into various groups dedicated to subjects and activities not normally covered in the regular curriculum. Each day consisted of two three-hour project classes and two 45-minute exploratory classes, covering a wide variety of subjects. Some classes have broad appeal, like cooking, fashion, and learning about foreign cultures; while others are decidedly more niche, like winter survival, video production, and a history of serial killers.
