Thornton talks storm sewer finance

The Thornton City Council continued their work towards a storm sewer renovation project during their regular meeting on Monday, April 1.

At the meeting, Chris Diggins of NIACOG was present to walk the council through their options for financing such a project. Unlike many city infrastructure projects there are few opportunities for grants to support storm sewers, however various loan programs are available. Since these loans often require cities to have a certain level of revenue dedicated to their water program, Diggins commended the council for gradually increasing their water rates, which opens the door to more opportunities.

“You guys have done well,” said Diggins.

Thornton residents will end up paying for a storm sewer project one way or the other, but the way it is paid for may be different depending on which direction the city goes.
