Sheffield residents weigh in on Sukup expansion plans

City Hall was crowded as residents came to share their thoughts on a potential rezoning action at the regular meeting of the Sheffield City Council on Monday, June 10.

Sukup Manufacturing has requested that five lots of residential zoned property on the west side of Oakwood Drive, south of their buildings, be changed to light industrial for the purpose of expanding their employee parking. Sukup Manufacturing has also requested that lots on the east side of Oakwood drive be rezoned but while that request was relatively uncontroversial, the plans for the western lots was not well received by the residents of W Crescent Drive whose backyards would face the new parking lot.

While the controversial plan was discussed, no action was taken by the council other than to schedule a formal public hearing about the rezoning request for the next meeting. Residents and representatives from Sukup Manufacturing will be invited to offer their feedback at that public hearing. Council member Dave Smit also requested that a representative from the planning and zoning board attend the public hearing as well.
