Rural roads show improvement as conditions dry

Warm, dry conditions, hard work and good old-fashioned time have led to some improvements to Franklin County’s rural roads.

County Engineer Jay Waddingham said that problem areas do still remain, but brief periods of dry weather have allowed crews to fill in ruts with rock and blade rough areas.

“Frost boils are going down, but there are still a lot of soft spots and rooted up areas,” he said. “They’re in better conditions than two months ago.”

Waddingham said the extreme cold and heavy snowfall of the winter has proved costly for the secondary roads department.

“We’ve spent an extra $450,000 on rock already this year,” he said. “We had to do a budget amendment for that."
