My Happy Haven fundraising gala honors area cancer survivors

Mason City-based organization My Happy Haven provided a night of glitz and glamour for local women who have faced a cancer diagnosis through the Chrysalis Ball, a fundraising celebration hosted at the Best Western in Clear Lake on October 7.

My Happy Haven is a community based non-profit organization comprised of a board of directors and volunteers dedicated to making a difference in the lives of women facing the fear and struggles of a cancer diagnosis by providing women with a bedroom makeover, giving them an environment to rest and heal in.

So far, My Happy Haven has completed nine bedroom makeovers — complete with new paint, carpeting, furniture and décor — for local women within a 30 mile radius of Mason City: Rose Hanson, Misty Theilen, Bridget True, Briana Sykes and Jean O’Neil (who will experience her room reveal this weekend), all of Mason City, Jessica Johnson and Karen Ringleb, of Hampton, Katie Blackdeer, of Rockwell and Sharon Lindsay, who ultimately lost her battle to cancer.

All of the organizations’ room recipients, except for Ringleb, who had another engagement, were honored at the Chrysalis Ball. The name for the event was conceived hand-in-hand with the butterfly that is part of the My Happy Haven logo. According to a press release from My Happy Haven, if you examine a butterfly according to the law of aerodynamics, it should not be able to fly, but the butterfly does not know that, so it flies. The event was named the Chrysalis Ball after the stage in a butterfly’s metamorphosis — the preparatory or transitional state. Since the organization is all about big “reveals,” the title Chrysalis fit well.
