Mitigating the risk of measles in Franklin County

First it was Ebola, then it was influenza, and now it’s the measles.

“If it’s not one thing, it’s something else,” said Christa Wiarda, Franklin County Public Health administrator.

Wiarda’s department has been reviewing internal policies and updating procedures following a recent nationwide outbreak of the measles virus. Last month more than 100 individuals in 14 states contracted the disease, which was once considered eradicated in the United States.

The Center for Disease Control traced the outbreak back to Disneyland in California. Four states bordering Iowa have confirmed measles cases, the most of which is South Dakota with 14.
