Franklin County celebrates 100 years of ISU Extension

It was an extra special celebration at the 4-H Awards Night on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Not only were the various 4-H clubs there to recognize the achievements of the kids and community for their contributions to the program, but it was a big anniversary for the Franklin County Iowa State University Extension.

Preceding the Awards Night, Franklin County Extension hosted an open house to celebrate their 100th anniversary.

In the early 20th century, Franklin County became one of 51 Iowa counties to receive their own extension branch from Iowa State University.

“They had to raise money locally,” said John Lawrence, Vice President of Iowa State University’s Extension and Outreach programs. “Farm bureaus went out and raised the money to bring Iowa State of the county.”
