Farmers look for summer sunshine as planting season wraps up

In spite of recent wet weather, local crop specialists say area farmers are in good shape for this year’s growing season.

According to Chuck Schafer of North Iowa Cooperative in Thornton and Steve Abbas of Farm Service Agency in Hampton, planting is all but finished in the Cerro Gordo, Franklin and Butler County region.

“I started myself on April 17, but I know there were people out planting on April 12 or 13,” said Abbas. “The ground conditions were right. The weather was right. It was probably a good time to get started.”

Without any late season snowfalls, warm weather allowed for a slightly early planting season, with farmers getting started within the first weeks of April.
