Area deer herd tests positive for CWD

A Clear Lake area deer preserve has been quarantined and depopulated following an outbreak of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) among the population.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, an inspection in July discovered the presence of CWD in a male white tail deer from a hunting preserve in southeast Iowa. Subsequent investigation traced the deer’s origins to a breeding operation owned by Tom and Rhonda Brakke of Clear Lake, where the deer were immediately quarantined until they were depopulated in August.

Last week the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship announced that of the 356 deer depopulated from the facility, 284 of them tested positive for the disease.

“From our standpoint, we are glad that the facility has been depopulated,” said Kevin Baskins of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
